Suzhou Museum: Think Twice!
-
Here, listen to me for a minute! If you plan on visiting the Suzhou Museum, there are some things you should know beforehand!
-
As for this museum, well... it's extremely photogenic architecturally! It's a real treat just to take photos here and there.
- But if you're going specifically for those "star pieces" (the most precious items in the museum), prepare yourself. For instance, I had to use a long-lens camera to finally get a clear view of the famous "mysterious blue celadon lotus bowl." Turns out many of these so-called "star exhibits" are actually replicas.
-
️ IMPORTANT REMINDER! The exhibition experience might be rather disheartening:
- The display layout can be confusing: Imagine bending over, then having to tiptoe just to see one exhibit. Really tiring, it is. These aren't just personal antiques on display!
- Inadequate detail showcasing: Take the double-sided embroidery, for example (a technique where patterns on both sides are identical or different yet equally exquisite). At least place a mirror behind it or provide images of the reverse side. How else can we appreciate its full beauty?
- There are fewer genuine artifacts than decorative designs.
-
The design of this museum is indeed spectacular, very modern and beautiful. However!
- Regarding souvenirs, I was quite excited initially. Yet, their co-design with the "Lion Grove" theme cultural and creative merchandise (a noted garden in Suzhou, integrated into the museum design) seems less impressive than what you find on roadside stalls. I wonder how upset the designer, the late Mr. I. M. Pei (legendary Chinese-American architect who designed the Louvre Pyramid, also created the Suzhou Museum), would have been about the current state.
-
Moreover, get ready to see stylishly dressed "beauties" all over the place (looking as though their makeup could fall off at any moment), posing and taking pictures from morning till night. This can genuinely interfere with viewing items.
-
Tsk! (Expressing strong discontent, akin to "Phew!" or "Finally!")
A VERY IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION:
- I am absolutely NOT criticizing the museum's architecture and garden landscape design; it’s indeed well-designed and superb for photography! The photos I've taken are taken at random and generally come out nice.
- However, as a "museum," it should embody its name! If it's merely an architectural showcase, it might as well be named directly as "Suzhou Architectural Art Gallery" or "Suzhou Garden Design Exhibition Center."
- Therefore, if you're going strictly for architectural appreciation, it's definitely worth your visit! This advice I fully endorse! If you’re hoping to see numerous珍贵文物and historical insights, however, it may be somewhat disappointing.
