It still happens, and their methods are very subtle. They operate in places like hypermarkets, wet markets, and parks, so parents have to be extremely vigilant. I've even heard of cases where they use children to lure other children.

It's really hard to guard against things like that.

Small as a sparrow, but it has all its vital organs.

People don't steal kids, but they will steal: Taiwanese fried chicken off your scooter, cleaning rags, umbrellas left outside, or even a watermelon and drinks from your basket.

Basically, whatever you leave out, they'll steal it. They stop just short of stealing the motorcycle itself.

I experienced something similar when I was little. My grandma told me that the girl next door, who was playing on the swing, left with some older 'big brothers and sisters.' Later, an 'auntie' (a woman) came asking if anyone had seen her daughter, and that's when they realized she had likely been abducted. Our teacher also warned us to stay away from vans – if one pulls up and the door opens, just run. And if an unfamiliar 'auntie' or 'uncle' (any unknown adult) grabs you, insisting you're their child who ran off and that you need to go home with them, you should shout 'Fire!' or call out your parents' names.

So 'dàng qiūqiān' (盪鞦韆 - to swing) really does have that many strokes! I always thought people joking about its complexity was just a meme.

I don't know about now, but I was almost kidnapped once. The culprit was pretty amateurish, though. The cloth they put over my mouth just had a pungent smell and didn't knock me out. I kept struggling until a neighbor saw what was happening and called the police. (My dad was on the toilet at home at the time; he heard me screaming my head off and just thought I was playing.)

Damn, your dad was pretty unfazed by it all, holy crap!

Actually, the pedophile rate in Taiwan isn't low. Another case of 'small as a sparrow, but it has all its vital organs.'

There are human traffickers too, but many of them aren't Taiwanese. Most of those who come to Taiwan are from... hmm, where could they possibly be from? So hard to guess, right?
