Adios, Hangzhou! City of... Uh... No Nightlife Whatsoever.
-
Let me share some experiences from Hangzhou with you all; there are places that are really interesting, and also a few little "pitfalls" to watch out for!
-
Lights show on the banks of Qiantang River – this was so unique compared to other shows I have seen elsewhere!
- It’s not just about lighting up some lasers or playing music, but it actually tells the stories of Hangzhou’s culture, giving it an extra depth. Qiantang River itself is an important river of Hangzhou, and this show is definitely worth watching!
-
China National Silk Museum – I would highly recommend this place for you!
- There is such a wide variety of ancient attire at different dynasties like Qing Dynasty (the last imperial dynasty of China, which lasted from late 17th to early 20th century), and Liao Dynasty (around mid 10th to early 12th century).
- We simply didn’t have enough time to visit all there were, but the way colors and patterns are put on those exquisite fabrics really impressed me, and they were beautiful as hell!
-
West Lake, we went there on 8th August, but my luck was not good. We only saw overcast skies.
- We didn’t see sunlit ripples over the lake or beautiful sunset, which made us a little bit disappointed.
- Photography Tips! When you're visiting Jingci Temple (a well-known ancient temple), try taking pictures of Leifeng Pagoda (an ancient pagoda that has legends associated with the White Snake) across the lake. It's the best angle, just like Photo #10.
-
Photo #11 shows the drink I had: vodka mixed with grape juice.
- It was my first time trying this combination, I expected it to taste strong, but it tasted sweet, just like fruit juice!

At a popular milk tea brand shop named “Milk Floater”...
- The shop staff are very cute-looking, pardon me, I meant that their milk teas are really good!
- By the way, they make their milk teas with real tea leaves right there on-site, not powder blends.

A kind reminder,
- We noticed that Hangzhou was fairly empty during the night hours and found many shops would close quite early.
- This could be due to it being a tourist off-season while we were there. So, it may be advised to leave early if planning to go shopping after midnight, or to check opening hours before visiting.

So, 'nightlife' just means wandering the streets aimlessly? You could always go to a bar, you know. Or is it that you can't afford it?
-
It's not easy for someone your age to say something like that.
-
For real nightlife, you've got to go to Guangzhou or Shenzhen.
-
Went there during the summer vacation.
-
In Hangzhou, only the malls try to stay open until 10:30 PM. Otherwise, you're pretty much looking at bars and similar places. Most people need to get to bed early for work the next day – at this hour, it's like even the 'rich kids' are busy packing at the factory.
-
Last night at 9:30 PM, I wanted to go to a salon to get my hair washed, but they were all closed—some by 8:00 PM, others by 9:00 PM! Meanwhile, in Xi'an at 9:00 PM, you can't even get a front-row spot for the musical fountain.
-
Can you see the Qiantang River from the angle in the picture?
-
Picture 2 is of the Qiantang River.
-
It's not because it's the off-season; there genuinely is no nightlife. We have to rush home to get the kids to bed and make sure they study.
-
Many restaurants close before 10 PM, that's so early!
-
Is there a light show today?
-
We went to the Qiantang River on the evening of the 7th, and there was one then. We've already left Hangzhou today.
-
There are more people out at night here than in Suzhou. Suzhou is practically deserted at night.
-
The buses also stop running really early; most are gone by 8 or 9 PM.
-
This actually counts as having nightlife now... Way back when I used to visit West Lake, the last buses were pretty much around 6 PM.
