Shenzhen: Tourist City or Tech Bro Central?

Many people may not know that Shenzhen is actually a hidden treasure of a tourist destination!

• We have incredibly long coastlines, with everything from beaches to amazing sea views.
• Within the city itself, there are many scenic spots waiting to be explored for hiking, such as Lotus Hill, Nanshan Hills, Pen架Mountain (Pen架Mountain is difficult to translate directly, it can be replaced with "Bi Jia Shan" which is its proper name), Tanglang Mountain, Phoenix Mountain, and Shenzhen's highest peak—Phoenix Mountain. These places offer some great lung-filling outings for weekends.

So why do we often perceive fewer people taking vacations in Shenzhen? A quick comparison with neighboring Guangzhou would help clarify things:

• Regarding City Pace and Expenses:

  • Friendly reminder: The living pace in Shenzhen is extremely fast, and the prices are indeed relatively high. Thus, if you prefer a more budget-friendly place, then Guangzhou could possibly suit you better.
    • What can be done? If you're considering visiting Shenzhen, make sure to set aside extra budget, or look into cost-effective local recommendations made by locals.

• Regarding Historical Culture:

  • Cultural enthusiast alert: Shenzhen is an incredibly young city with only several decades of history, developed rapidly from a small fishing village into an international metropolis. Therefore, if historical ruins dating back several hundred years are what you seek, Shenzhen might not fully satisfy your expectations.
  • Meanwhile, Guangzhou boasts a profound 'Lingnan culture' (special traditions native to the southern China regions, including Cantonese opera, riding style buildings, tea culture, etc.).
    • What can be done? Visiting Shenzhen offers a lot of modern, vibrant, and innovative experiences instead; walking through towering skyscrapers or theme parks would undoubtedly be thrilling!

• Regarding Geographic Location:

  • Guangzhou's position is at the central spot of the province, offering convenience to transit cities such as Dongguan, Foshan, Zhuhai, Qingyuan, and Huizhou.
  • In contrary, located further south, Shenzhen serves as a transportation hub for Hong Kong, another tourist destination.

In spite of all this, Shenzhen's travel destinations are indeed plentiful, with many of them being well-known insider's secrets!
For example, Shenzhen has superb urban greenways, perfect for bike rides or relaxed strolls, as well as plenty of fascinating modern art displays and eye-catching architecture.

Therefore, don't let the conventional mentality fool you, and I warmly invite everyone to visit Shenzhen and experience it for themselves!
