Taiwanese Friends in the House?
-
Oh my, sister, let me tell you, I am in Shanghai, considering a trip to Taiwan, but found that the process is way too complicated!
-
Requirements on the mainland:
- First, you need a document called "Mainland Residents Travel to Taiwan Permit," which you can think of as our "special passport" for traveling to Taiwan.
- However, having just the permit isn't enough. You also need to apply for an "endorsement," which is like affixing a stamp to this special passport as approval for your trip.
-
Application required by Taiwan:
- What's more, you have to obtain a "Mainland Residents Entry Permit of ROC Taiwan," which serves as Taiwan's entry permit. It means both parties need to consent before you can go!
-
Not any simpler via alternative routes:
- Some people suggest taking a flight through Hong Kong or Macao instead.
- Unfortunately, it turns out that if you are a holder of a Chinese (mainland) passport, you may require another document called the "Permit for Residents of the Mainland to Travel to Hong Kong and Macao" along with an endorsement, and sometimes even having to use your passport. This adds additional burden not only regarding documents but also the inconvenience of a detour on your journey.
Can't we simplify this process? It's exhausting just running around to get all these papers!
️ Reminder for visitors planning to travel to Taiwan:
-
The Marathon of Document Obtaining, Plan Ahead!
- Mainland residents need "Two Permits and an Endorsement": The Chinese (mainland) Travel to Taiwan Permit with endorsement, plus Taiwan's Mainland Residents Entry Permit.
- Why so complex? This is mainly attributed to the special historical and political relationship between mainland China and Taiwan, making cross-strait visits more complicated than international travel.
- Suggested solution: Familiarize yourself with the respective procedures and required timeframes for obtaining various documents, especially as Taiwan permits may encounter shortages at times. It's recommended that preparation starts 1-2 months before the intended trip.
-
Transit via Hong Kong or Macao, Double Check Policies!
- Possibility of extra documents: If traveling from mainland China through Hong Kong or Macao to Taiwan, it's imperative to verify if you require additional permits such as the Permit for Residents of the Mainland to Travel to Hong Kong and Macao, as well as passport presentation.
- How to avoid trouble? Purchase airlines offered "combined flights," and carefully review policies concerning transfers at Hong Kong or Macao airports, understanding if you need to transit through entry-exit zones, which would require permits and endorsements.
Hope everyone can enjoy their travel to Taiwan smoothly!
