My Suzhou Trip: Seriously, It Was THAT Bad.
-
Hello everyone, dear travel enthusiasts!
I am considering a trip to Suzhou recently and I would like to ask those friends who have been there:
-
Did you come across any inconvenient or suboptimal experiences during your visit - anything that made you say “uh oh, this place isn't as convenient” or “this experience could be better”? (I am really interested in hearing your genuine thoughts on your experiences in the city, both positive and negative!)
-
Of course, even better are all kinds of recommendations for fantastic sights, delicious foods, or small practical travel tips that make your visit to Suzhou amazing! (I am also looking forward to your positive reviews and recommendations!)
My plans are still very much in progress. Therefore, everyone's experiences mean so much to me. Thank you in advance for your help!

Xiyuan Temple is a must-visit, absolutely worth it! And Shen Wansan's chicken feet are delicious!
-
Xiangxuehai Restaurant is highly recommended by many, and the food is decent. However, if there are only two of you, I'd advise against it. The portions are huge, and it costs around 100-200 yuan per person.
-
Definitely don't order takeout from Chen Ji Wontons (Wuqufang)!!
-
It's incredibly crowded, e-bikes are zipping around everywhere, and it's a food desert.
-
Watch out for the numerous unlicensed taxis right outside the train station! The whole area is extremely crowded. The old street feels like many others across China, more akin to Shanghai's Yuyuan Garden area than unique, explorable districts like Tianzifang or Xintiandi. Honestly, the offerings are pretty mediocre and not very good.

Welcome to Suzhou! If you have enough time, I highly recommend spending a night in one of the ancient water towns. For getting around the old city district, go for green transport: take the subway, or rent an e-bike from one of the many convenient rental shops. Suzhou also has its own public bike-sharing system (often green bikes) – the first hour is free, and you can just switch to another bike when the time's up to keep riding for free. This makes it easy to explore the entire old city. During public holidays, it's best to avoid taxis in the old city, as even buses get caught in heavy traffic.
