Shenzhen: Why Visiting Makes You a Laughingstock? 1

Alright, no problem! Let's talk a bit about what it's like in Shenzhen for those of you who want to visit. I'll break down my honest thoughts with you:

    • Regarding the food in Shenzhen...

      • To be frank, if you come especially for "Shenzhen local snacks," you might feel a little let down. It’s not that there aren’t delicious items; it’s that Shenzhen is more like a melting pot of various cuisines from all over the world. If you’re looking specifically for unique "Shenzhen flavors," they can be hard to come by.
      • Therefore, when friends ask what good food they can find in Shenzhen, my standard answer often involves a swing of the hand and a suggestion: "Why not head over to nearby Shunde?" (Shunde is a renowned city close by, awarded as "City of Gastronomy" by UNESCO, offering many highlights of Cantonese cuisine.)
    • Looking for historical sites? Your expectations may need some adjustment.

      • Shenzhen is a very young city that was merely a small fishing village decades ago. As far as the eye can see, it mostly consists of modern high-rises, with little trace of history.
    • Be prepared for expenses.

      • From my personal experience, the cost-effectiveness isn’t so great regarding dining, entertainment, and sightseeing in Shenzhen—the prices might be slightly higher than you anticipate.
    • So, what makes Shenzhen unique?

      • Haha, if I were to say it this way, perhaps the biggest peculiarity of Shenzhen is 'the workers here’! This city thrives with vigor and opportunities, attracting young people from all corners of the country to work hard. This relentless spirit could be considered the most distinctive feature of Shenzhen!
    • Endless shopping malls…

      • The shopping malls in Shenzhen indeed seem endless, offering every brand under the sun. Nevertheless, isn’t it now common in other big cities to have fancy shopping centers? Therefore, this no longer constitutes a special advantage.

To sum up, Shenzhen presents itself as a dynamic, modern metropolis full of opportunities; yet, for those keen on rich historical culture or unique local cuisine, you may want to shift the focus of your visit accordingly.

The best way to enjoy Shenzhen is to find a nice spot with a good view, like a cafe or tea house. Just sit down, enjoy the scenery, chat, read, or browse your phone, and then head to a nearby restaurant for a meal when it's time.
