 I just came back from a five-day trip to Beijing. I found that many posts on XHS are clickbait and misleading. Let me first talk about the places I visited these few days👇 Flag-raising at Tiananmen, Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, The Forbidden City, Qianmen Street, Badaling Great Wall, Olympic Park, Bird's Nest, Water Cube, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, Old Summer Palace (Yuanmingyuan), Tsinghua University, and Peking University. 👉🏻 First of all, let me rant about the anxiety spread by预约(an app for booking): If you can't book tickets online, you can go to the scene. Many places offer on-site ticket purchases or reservations. During these days, except for the Tiananmen Tower and the Great Hall of the People, I saw on-site ticket purchases everywhere!! 👉🏻 Should you bring a bag? Not bringing a bag will indeed make the queue faster than with a bag, but it depends on the attraction. It’s actually not much of a difference, so if you want to bring a bag, you can. There are a lot of people, and whether you bring a bag or not, you still have to wait in line! Beijing Travel Tips: 📍 The Jinshui Bridge outside the Tiananmen Tower is one-way; only enter, no exit. If you've already booked tickets for Mao Memorial Hall, National Museum, or the Great Hall of the People, visit them first. Once you pass through, if you want to return to the square, you’ll need to detour for half an hour. Don’t cross randomly!! 📍 Route from Tiananmen to The Forbidden City: Watch the flag-raising -- Chairman Mao Memorial Hall -- Great Hall of the People -- Tiananmen Square -- Tiananmen Tower -- The Forbidden City 📍 For those over 60 years old (70 years old for the memorial hall), pregnant women, and disabled individuals, there is a special love lane at The Forbidden City. One elderly person can bring one minor and have one accompanying person. 📍 The flag-raising time is not fixed; it generally coincides with sunrise. It’s recommended to arrive 1-2 hours early. If you want to be in the front row, you’ll need to queue up between 3-4 AM (there are a lot of people). 📍 The National Museum allows power banks that are undamaged, under 20,000 mAh, and not bulging. However, they cannot be used inside the exhibition halls. 📍 The Great Wall is far from the city center, so it’s suggested to allocate a full day. Badaling has more people but better scenery. You can take a bus or high-speed train from Beijing North Station. Mutianyu has fewer people but is further from the city. 📍 If visiting the Temple of Heaven, don't enter from the East Gate. It’s recommended to enter from the South Gate and exit from the North Gate to fully enjoy the most characteristic attractions. 📍 It’s not recommended to buy a joint ticket for the Summer Palace because it’s too large to cover everything in a day. Focus on major attractions such as the Long Corridor, Fragrance Buddha Pavilion, Seventeen-Arch Bridge, and Grand Theater. 📍 It’s advisable to bring a bag when visiting Beijing attractions; otherwise, it could be inconvenient. In the off-season, the speed of the bag and no-bag lanes is similar, and sometimes they are even checked together. 📍 It’s recommended to visit the Water Cube in the evening when the lights are on and look better. Since security checks are required, carry light luggage. 📍 Niujie mainly features Halal snacks. Personally, I find the taste average, and locals rarely go there. For authentic Beijing cuisine, head to Huoguo Temple Street. The above are my suggestions for avoiding pitfalls. Being a first-timer in Beijing without experience, and wanting to avoid superficial sightseeing, I genuinely recommend joining a local tour like I did. It includes meals, accommodation, and entrance fees. Upon arrival in Beijing, you'll have door-to-door transportation services, which are quite hassle-free.
