Guangzhou: My Friends Ask 'What's Fun Here?' My Brain? Total Blank. 1

Hey there everyone! I have been living in Guangzhou all along, but to be honest, I feel like there aren't that many highlights within the city that really stand out or that one must visit.

    • So this confuses me: during Chinese New Year – the most important holiday here, similar to Christmas or New Year's Day for you – Guangdong Province, of which Guangzhou is its capital, turns out to have the highest income from tourism in the whole country. It was said that the revenue hit an impressive 74.5 billion RMB!
    • This only adds to my confusion:
      • During the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year), the city actually tends to be quite empty because many locals actually go "back home" for the New Year celebrations.
        • Cultural Tip: Going "back home" is very significant in Chinese culture. It means going back to your place of birth or where your ancestors lived, and gathering with family to celebrate the New Year. This is why large cities like Guangzhou turn into ghost towns during the Spring Festival.
      • Furthermore, didn't people say that the economy is a bit slow now and they are tight on some cash?
    • So, I wonder where all this money came from – did it come from tourists who aren’t from Guangdong? Or are people just feigning concern over their finances while still venturing out just as much as ever? I am really curious now!

You've probably never been to the North. Guangzhou has all sorts of parks, big and small, Beijing Road, Yongqing Fang, the Zoo, Botanical Garden, Baiyun Mountain, the Spring Festival Flower Market, Yuexiu Lantern Show, Lingnan Impression Park, new cultural venues, several Chimelong theme parks, and Pearl River night cruises. Plus, the comfortable 20°C weather during Chinese New Year is a huge bonus. Most importantly, hotel prices barely go up during the festival – you can get a room at Vienna Hotel for 300 RMB, or a five-star like China Hotel or Dong Fang Hotel for 1000 RMB. Honestly, there aren't many cities better suited for tourism than Guangzhou.

Exactly. Spending Chinese New Year in Guangzhou is so much more comfortable than in the North. My colleagues from Henan even tell me I'm crazy for not staying in Guangzhou for the holiday and instead choosing to go to freezing places. I spent 8 days in Beijing this Chinese New Year, and by the second day, I was already itching to come back to Guangzhou. It was cold, crowded, I had to wear heavy clothes, the wind was wicked, and I couldn't find a single decent thing to eat. Guangzhou is just so much better!

And that's even when Guangdong's tourism board isn't even trying that hard to promote it...
