Oh my, today, driven by this unusual enthusiasm of mine, I took a stroll around Xiahe Zhi Street in Hangzhou.

Let me tell you about my experience:

    • The alleys there are narrow and packed; as far as the eye can see, they're bustling with people – either selling local snacks or feverishly snapping photos at various attractions.

    • Frankly speaking, I didn't think there was anything particularly remarkable about it – not quite living up to its reputation.

⚠️ A friendly reminder for foreign friends:

    • What is a "Cultural and Historical Street Block"?

      • A place like Xiahe Zhi Street can be found in many Chinese cities; they usually consist of renovated old houses, coupled with numerous commercial stalls offering souvenirs, snacks, coffee, etc. This is purported to offer visitors a taste of Hangzhou's traditional 'old town' vibe.
    • Why might one be disappointed?

      • As its popularity increases, more tourists inevitably pour in, making it extraordinarily crowded during weekends or holidays; this often ruins the relaxing feeling of strolling through a lesser-known area.
      • If you're hoping for a serene environment or an authentic ancient-town experience, your desires may not be fulfilled since the area has a pronounced commercial atmosphere.
    • Options at hand:

      • Avoid crowds: If you do wish to go there, try visiting during weekdays or very early mornings; the fewer people there will make it a much better experience.
      • Adjust expectations: Treat it as a bustling place where you can eat, walk, and take in some imitation historical buildings; perhaps this approach can help adjust your mindset.
      • Explore nearby areas: Sometimes, the unknown alleys flanking the main street can feel much livelier.

In conclusion, if you desire the true seclusion and local flavor, you may need to find other alternatives!

It used to be such a great place to wander around, with lots of unique little shops and cafes where you could spend hours. Now, it's pretty much all turned into a 'hairpin flower street'.

It's true, it's really gone downhill in recent years. It's become completely commercialized, especially after they demolished the old oil depot/tank farm that used to be at the back.

This used to be our go-to spot for an after-dinner walk! But in recent years, it's suddenly become so crowded that we locals can't even enjoy it anymore.

Even West Lake is just a place for a casual after-dinner stroll for locals. So, when it comes to Xiaohe Straight Street, there's really no need to make a special trip just to see it.
