Sigh, what a disaster. If you're coming to Beijing, definitely avoid travel agencies – they're all scams.

Joining group tours often means getting ripped off without recourse; you just can't win against their word games. And that's just in Beijing! Imagine being in a completely unfamiliar foreign country. In Thailand, they threatened to call the (Thai) police on me. They also claimed I couldn't possibly travel to places like Singapore or Malaysia on my own due to 'difficulties' and had to join their tour (which meant forced shopping). The joke was on them, though – they didn't know I'm not easily intimidated and am pretty defiant. I decisively ditched their tour.

A 'VIP spot for the flag-raising ceremony'? I've honestly never heard of such a thing.

Aren't people who choose these tours just looking for a cheap deal? If you don't want to spend money, you can't expect good service.

Looking for tips on what to avoid; I'm heading to Beijing. I'm actually interested in a one-day tour to Badaling Great Wall and the Ming Tombs, and I'm looking for a group. Independent travel would be too expensive, and I feel I wouldn't really get it without a guide.

Tours under 2000 RMB likely all include shopping stops.

A 'VIP spot for the flag-raising ceremony'? If you see that advertised, just run. Even the most important person in the world would have to queue and fight for a spot like everyone else.
