Beijing Shidu: Went for 'Fun,' Got This Warning Instead – Just DON'T.
-
Please listen to my advice: If you're planning to visit Shi-Duo, think it over carefully!
Located in the outskirts of Beijing, Shi-Duo is famous for its mountain-water landscape (especially the karst landscape with many rocks). However, I must be honest:
- You must mentally prepare yourself: The scenery here mainly consists of rocky mountains; stones are everywhere.
- Moreover, the wind here is actually really strong! It always feels "wild" throughout the year.
- When the wind blows, sand and soil fill the air, making it hard to open your eyes.
So if you ask me whether it's fun to visit, I personally feel that the experience there isn't great.
!!! IMPORTANT TRAVEL TIP !!!
- Defending against strong winds is key!
- You'd better bring a windproof jacket because you'll probably get blown away without one regardless of what time of year you're visiting.
- Protecting your eyes, nose, and mouth!
- When the wind is strong, sand and dust fill the air; we recommend wearing sunglasses and even a mask, otherwise, you will inevitably end up "eating sand", and your eyes will feel uncomfortable.
- Adjust your expectations!
- If you imagine a scenic spot with birds singing, flowers blooming and high refinement, Shi-Duo might not meet your expectations. It features more rugged, natural scenery. If you have reservations about this somewhat "wild" landscape or sensitive to dust, perhaps it's really not the right place for you.

Also, the accommodation was super noisy with terrible soundproofing. Definitely steer clear of Yilan Fanghua Guesthouse.
-
We just did a day trip, haha.
-
Yeah, it gets pretty windy and dusty this season. To be honest, the spring winds in Beijing can be the worst. When guests book for the Qingming Festival, I always give them a heads-up. The best time to visit Shidu is actually after April 20th.
-
How's the scenery around the May Day holiday?
-
What all did you do? And where did you get your tickets?
-
The place we went to didn't require tickets; we were just there to enjoy the views.
-
So Shidu caught some flak from you because of the wind, huh?
-
Ahahaha, well said! The art of language indeed.
-
Not fun, huh?
-
It's not quite the right season yet. I reckon in another couple of weeks, the experience will be much better than it is now.
-
Planning to go tomorrow.
-
Did you go in the last day or two?
-
Yep, it's best to go after April 20th.
-
Oh, by the way, you can haggle for horseback riding. You should be able to get a ride for 15 or 20. Whatever you do, don't pay 50 and get ripped off!
-
Thank you.
