Please take my advice; if you plan to visit the Tiananmen Square in Beijing, prepare yourself mentally!

    • I am here now and have been queuing for as long as three full hours, wow, I haven’t even caught a glimpse of what the security checkpoint looks like!
    • The crowd control over here is incredibly stringent (what they call it “extreme flow control”). Hence, people are being let in at an incredibly slow pace.

    Reminder for foreign friends:

    • Tiananmen Square is a famous place in Beijing with significant historical importance. Many people want to see it, so a large number of visitors is the norm.
    • But, “extreme flow control” means that the authorities will strictly limit the number of people who can be in the square at a given time to ensure safety and order.

How can you not waste time in queues?

    • Avoid peak times: If possible, try to avoid visiting during China's public holidays (e.g., National Day, Labor Day) or weekends. There will be fewer people on weekdays.
    • Early birds catch the worms: Try to queue up early in the morning, before most travel groups and tourists arrive.
    • Be informed: Ask your hotel or check recent travel tips, finding out whether you need to make online appointments in advance, or which time slots might have fewer people present on the same day.

All in all, this queueing experience has been a bit of a meltdown. I hope my experience can help you!

It's said that people who go to Tiananmen Square are usually not Beijing locals.
