Xiaohongshu's 'Must-See' Spots Had Me Deep in Thought... Like, REALLY Deep.
-
Here's the translation:
Well, I can so relate to this feeling!
Indeed, Guangzhou has been hyped up online, but I feel a bit conflicted about it.
- Recently, I've been browsing through XiaoHongShu (Little Red Book) — an incredibly popular App in China similar to a combination of Instagram and Pinterest in your region. It's full of travel, food, and shopping 'product placement' notes, which are essentially recommendations.
- Instead, I've been looking over those so-called must-visit attractions in Guangzhou repeatedly…
- Oh gosh, just their names and descriptions have not sparked any interest in me at all. I couldn't help but think, "Ugh, these places sound like... not really that appealing?"
- There was definitely no 'Wow! I have to go there!' impulse at all.
So, is it the way I've approached Guangzhou that's flawed, or are these recommendations just a bit... well, you get what I mean.

Not fun at all. I'm really disappointed with this city, and it's incredibly hot.
-
It feels way too humid. As a northerner, I can't stand it.
-
I love Guangzhou! There's so much nightlife, and it's a lot of fun!
-
Where should we go out tonight?
How about some 8+1?
-
Yeah, it's just not that fun. I'd rather stay at school or home. I guess it's somewhat suitable for city walks, but the streets are a bit dirty too.
-
I'm still not used to the fact that there are so few trash cans around.
-
Yeah, it's uncomfortable for me just to go out.
-
Guangzhou isn't really a tourist city. If you come just for the sights, you'll definitely be disappointed.
-
I agree. Guangzhou is really only suitable for people from nearby cities that aren't as bustling or don't have as many trendy/Instagrammable shops.
-
Go check out the areas where Black people gather and then see if it's fun.
-
Is that racial discrimination?
-
Are there many Black people in Guangzhou?
-
Not as many as you'd think, but you do encounter them a bit more frequently than in other cities.
-
It's not Guangzhou's fault, it's Xiaohongshu's. Many places recommended there are 'photo traps' – they look amazing in pictures but are disappointing in real life. For example, what looks like a huge field of hydrangeas is actually just a tiny patch...
-
For fun, there's Chimelong. And in the summer, you can go rafting in Qingyuan – it's really exciting!
-
I think I might plan a trip to Qingyuan. I've seen so many people saying the food is great and it's lots of fun [heart_eyes_R].
-
Guangzhou's museums are okay for a visit, but Beijing Road, Shamian Island, and Yongqing Fang are all pretty boring.
-
Museums? Are you serious?
