Sharing My Experience at Shenzhen Astronomical Observatory

Hi everyone! I want to share my experience about a place called Shenzhen Astronomical Observatory. The photos online make it look ethereal, right? However, there are a few things you should know if you plan to visit to avoid feeling frustrated.

    • The Most Important Thing: Reserve Your Tickets! Reserve! Reserve!

      • This isn't somewhere you can just show up and visit; you need to grab your tickets in advance through official channels (usually via WeChat Official Accounts).
      • "Grab," in this case, is no exaggeration—tickets go in mere seconds. It's common for popular Chinese destinations to have limited availability, as the crowds are immense.
      • ⚠️ Warning: Don't count on luck by showing up at the gate without a reservation—the odds are high that you will have wasted your trip.
        • How to Avoid It: Keep an eye out for official announcements about when tickets will be released, and set your alarm to get them on time. Typically, they're released a few days in advance.
    • The Location Is Tricky, So Be Prepared for Travel

      • The observatory is on a mountain near the seaside, offering stunning views but also a bit of a distance from the city center.
      • You'll take public transportation first and then switch to a shuttle bus that gets to the mountain.
      • ⚠️ Note: The shuttle bus may require waiting, or driving may not be advisable due to difficult road conditions and limited parking availability.
        • How to Avoid It: Research the current transportation options beforehand and allocate extra time for transit. If using ride-hailing services, arrange for pickup and return rides to ensure you aren’t stranded.
    • Weather Matters!

      • With the observatory near the sea, weather heavily influences how much you can see.
      • Heavy fog, rain, or poor visibility may hinder observation and even prevent access for safety reasons.
      • ⚠️ Warning: Bad weather does not only lessen your sightseeing experience but can prevent entry.
        • How to Avoid It: Check the weather forecast a few days ahead and again the morning of your trip—clear skies offer the best views.
    • What You See Inside

      • Many people are drawn to the large white domes and the expansive sea views, creating great photo opportunities!
      • If you're an astronomy enthusiast, the telescopes will interest you. However, for most visitors, it's mainly about admiring the scenery via boardwalks.
      • Little Complaint: If you expect lots of interactive exhibits or high-tech experiences, you might be left slightly disappointed; it’s more of an observation point.
    • Travel Tips Summary:

      • Secure tickets early!
      • Choose a good day for the trip.
      • Wear comfortable shoes, as you'll likely walk along a boardwalk.
      • Bring some food and drinks, as there isn't much variety up there.
      • Keep a realistic attitude, as it's primarily there to enjoy the breeze, landscapes, and take photos.

Overall, if you manage to secure the reservation and experience clear weather along with suitable conditions, Shenzhen Astronomical Observatory is truly worth a visit! Just make sure to prepare in advance. Have fun exploring!

Looking for directions! How do I get there by public transport? I'm a tourist from out of town and don't have a car.

Take Line 8 to Xiaomeisha, then grab a taxi.

What time was the first picture taken? It looks quite crowded.
