Suzhou: Seriously, This Place Has a Mean 'Bite Back'...
-
Sigh, just left Suzhou, and the feeling... is like today's overcast clouds
️, a bit lost and somewhat surreal.
It's as though I'm experiencing a sense of disconnection from reality.- Suzhou is an extraordinary city:
- It has its distinctly traditional Chinese side, such as those famous gardens and small bridges with flowing water. (For my foreign friends: Suzhou is known for its finely crafted classical gardens and canal networks, an old-world charm that many films often portray and Suzhou has plenty of.)
- At the same time, it also boasts very modern areas, including SIP (Suzhou Industrial Park).
- The contrast between old and new culture might be one reason for that sense of disorientation.
Here are some places that I visited during this trip, for your reference (with pinyin in brackets to help you locate them on map apps):
- P1: Wind Garden (Fēngzhī Yuán - can be understood as a park themed around wind)
- P2: Jinshuiwan Pier (Jīnshuǐwān Zhànqiáo - a wooden wharf or pontoon at Jinshuiwan)
- P3: Xiangmen Ancient City Wall (Xiāngmén Chéngqiáng - the stretch of ancient city wall near Xiangmen. Yes, it refers to the high walls built by ancient cities for defense, full of historical feel!)
- P4: Catholic Church in SIP (Yuánqū Tiānzhǔ Jiàotáng - a Catholic church in SIP with more modern architectural style)
- P5: Cang Street (Cāng Jiē - an old street brimming with history, great for casual browsing)
- P6: Lion's Hill (Shīzig shān - may refer to a hill resembling a lion in appearance or simply called Lion's Hill)
- P7: Pianmen (Pánmén - a well-known historical site of Suzhou where ancient waterway and overland gates combine into one of a kind feature)
- P8: Dushu Lake Church (Dúshūhú Jīdū Jiàotáng - a Christian church by Dushu Lake, also a modern building, with good scenery)
- P9: Jinji Lake Stop No.6 (Jīnjīhú Yìzhàn No.6 - Visitor rest station/panoramic deck no. 6 at Jinji Lake. Jinji Lake is a large artificial lake in Suzhou's new district)
- P10: Jinji Lake Stop No.2 (Jīnjīhú Yìzhàn No.2 - Similar to the above, visitor rest station/panoramic deck no. 2 at Jinji Lake)
