Summer in Taiwan? Seriously, Just Don't. It's WAY Too Hot.
-
Well, folks, let me tell you, I've come from a place where it's scorching hot all year round. Upon arriving in Taipei, I was truly astounded by the heat – how could it be so intense here?! I felt as if I were in a sauna.
By the way, the weather here is utterly unreasonable:
- From bright sunshine to torrential downpour, the weather can change within a split second.
- The sun comes back blazing right after the rain stops.
- What's worst is when it's stiflingly humid. It feels sticky and uncomfortable on the skin.
Furthermore, I wonder if it has anything to do with the pandemic because I couldn't find many restaurants
or clothing shops that I had heard were good or trendy places online or from my friends.
- Following suggestions recommended by Redbook (XHS, a popular lifestyle-sharing app among young Chinese), I have encountered quite a few disappointing experiences.
- Places described in guidelines as "must-go" popular shopping areas turned out to be not very appealing. The fashion styles are rather common, and there wasn't much to buy after spending hours wandering around. That made me really upset.
- I assume the pandemic might have hit these unique shops hard and they may take a while to bounce back. Possibly only after a few years, Taipei would finally recover, and revisiting at that time may result in a more enjoyable experience.
Important Advice for those planning to visit Taipei in summer:
- Be cautious in deciding whether to travel in summer unless you are well-accommodated to heat for it will likely affect your mood for exploring.
- If you still decide to see Taipei in summer, pack breathable clothes, sunscreen lotion, sun umbrella, and perhaps portable fans. Remember to stay hydrated and avoid venturing outside at the hottest time of the day – noontime.
However, there are still tasty places in Taipei. No need to worry about that.
- In my next post, I will share some dining experiences where I found the food and atmosphere top-notch. Hopefully, it helps to prevent my readers from having a disappointing experience like me.

I honestly don't get it. Xiaohongshu recommended Chifeng Street, so when my friend visited, they insisted on dragging me there. It was scorching hot and incredibly boring! Taiwanese summers are incredibly muggy – anyone who's experienced it knows what I mean.
-
Chifeng Street is best explored starting around dusk when it's still light out but not too hot, and the shops are open. On weekends, it's more fun if you pair it with the Zhongshan Linear Park, especially if there's a market.
-
From late May to the end of September, it's basically always muggy and sticky. The weather might be nice and the clouds beautiful, but being outdoors is brutal. I'd recommend avoiding Taiwan during this period unless your itinerary is strictly limited to indoor shopping and eating in the city.
-
Is October a good time to visit Taiwan?
-
Summer just started this year, and it's already incredibly hot.
-
When I was a kid, summer nights could actually get a little chilly. I don't know if it's because everyone's blasting their ACs these years or what, but it's terrifyingly hot now.
-
The moment Taiwanese people feel that summer vibe, a voice in their head probably says, 'Well, the good days are over...' It's just too hot. Seriously, please don't visit Taiwan in the summer~~~~
-
It also makes you wonder, 'Did I really survive last summer like this...?'
-
Nope, just stayed in Taipei city. The weather's so unbearable, I didn't even want to go out.
-
It's 30°C today in my city in northern China.
-
It's seriously so much hotter than Japan.
-
Tell me about it! I was in Japan, and then flew to Taiwan – the heat here is just so much more intense.
-
Seriously, I've tried 3 restaurants recommended on Xiaohongshu (xhs) so far, and 2 of them were terrible! So for the rest of my trip, I'm completely avoiding places recommended on xhs. Taipei is way too hot; I even got heatstroke yesterday. It's supposed to be even hotter this weekend – I think I'm going to pass out.
-
Yeah, Xiaohongshu recommendations have let me down so many times. Now I just go into places that look good to me; I don't follow xhs anymore.
-
Yesterday, I stepped out for half an hour to pick up my kid, and it felt like I was evaporating. You absolutely need sunscreen and a hat, and to cover up well when you go out, otherwise it's truly awful.

Oh man, that sounds rough. I feel uncomfortable just reading about it.
