Hello, everyone! Today, we're going to explore several well-known tourist attractions that may disappoint visitors when they actually visit them. After reading this article, you'll be able to avoid most of the common pitfalls in travel!

    Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street

This is undoubtedly the most famous shopping street in Shanghai, bustling with activity and energy. However, once you arrive, you'll find it overrun by crowds and filled with various chain stores. If you're looking for a taste of authentic Old Shanghai, it can be challenging to find one. Even locals don't prefer visiting here often.

    Public Rating: 3.5/5
"Why Is It Not Well Received?":

    • Seriously, there are so many people!
    • The area feels heavily commercialized, similar to pedestrian streets in other big cities, lacking uniqueness.
    • Item prices could potentially be high.

    City God Temple/ Yuyuan Bazaar

Many say this place offers the best glimpse of ancient Shanghai’s charm. In reality, it has become mainly a tourist-oriented zone. The food, while priced a little high, isn’t as tasty. Local specialties available in other Chinese tourist spots can also be found here.

    Public Rating: 3.4/5
"Why Is It Not Well Received?":

    • The snacks may bring disappointment due to their prices and taste.
    • Heavily commercialized area.
    • It can become extremely crowded during festivals.
    • Heads Up! If you plan to visit Yu Garden (a beautiful classical garden), beware: the bazaar region might induce impulse purchases.

    Oriental Pearl Tower

One of Shanghai's most iconic buildings! But, for about $30, you may have to wait for two hours just to enjoy a few minutes viewing the scenery. The sightseeing view from here is quite similar to that seen at the Bund (free!)

    Public Rating: 3.6/5
"Why Is It Not Well Received?":

    • Admit admission price.
    • Long queues likely.
    • Value for money isn't exceptional.
    • Tip! Appreciating the majesty of the Oriental Pearl Tower from the Bund could be a good alternative and is free!

    Tianzifang

Previously a favorite of many young artists, who appreciated the many unique stores and studios. Now it has become heavily commercialized, selling items similar to those found online but at significantly higher prices.

    Public Rating: 3.5/5
"Why Is It Not Well Received?":

    • Extremely commercialized currently.
    • Shops selling similar mass-produced products.
    • Loss of original artistic allure.
    • Be wary of spending: check prices before buying.

    Madame Tussauds Wax Museum

Entry costs around $28. Inside, some wax figures may look less-than-realistic, with quality varying greatly. Visiting usually lasts just an hour or two.

    Public Rating: 3.3/5
"Why Is It Not Well Received?":

    • Not cheap tickets.
    • Quality of wax figures varies significantly.
    • Short duration of visit.

    Shanghai Ocean Aquarium

It boasts being one of the largest in Asia, but the facilities feel outdated and some glass windows in aquariums may impair visibility. Particularly disappointing is the short submarine tunnel – one may question if the ¥160 ticket value is justified.

    Public Rating: 3.4/5
"Why Is It Not Well Received?":

    • Facilities somewhat outdated.
    • High ticket prices.
    • Overall experience may be underwhelming.
    • The submarine tunnel turns out shorter than expected.

    Takeaway

While these sites aren't entirely without merit, lowering expectations can be key to enjoying visits. For truer local experiences:

    • Walk along Wukang Road or Sinan Road, former French Concession areas with numerous well-preserved old houses and quiet shops.
    • Shanghai Museum, ideal if you have interest in Chinese culture.

What other famous tourist destinations in Shanghai that can be underwhelming have you visited? Share thoughts in the comment section!
