Isn't it only a few years since the Taichung Railway Station was renovated in grand fashion? At that time, I even went there especially to take photos and post them on my social media. After all, the old station was over a hundred years old and was definitely becoming inadequate, so parts of it have been transformed into cultural and art spaces, historical exhibitions, or restaurants. A leisure area called Luhua Riverside Promenade was also built in front of the station, adding much vitality to this historic district and old station.

This Spring Festival, when I came back wanting to shop at the market beside the station and grab a coffee, I really was surprised... In just a few short years, how has the "face" of this city deteriorated so much!

    • Speaking of the background, Taichung Railway Station used to be at the heart of the city's center long ago.
      • Most of the bustling vibrancy from back then is no longer visible today, leaving only mostly derelict buildings. Even though some of these have gone through renovations, not many new buildings have been constructed.
    • A reminder for friends visiting Taichung for the first time:
      • There are quite a few people from Southeast Asia living and working in Taiwan now. So, in this old district, you’ll see that many pedestrians, street shops exhibit a distinct Southeast Asian flair.
        • Be aware of: Due to different lifestyles and habits, maintaining a clean environment can sometimes pose a challenge, hence some places may appear messier than others.
      • Pay extra attention to: At the square outside the station and its surroundings, you might notice quite a few homeless individuals resting there or begging.
        • It would have an adverse impact on the city aesthetics. Besides, this also brings about issues with dirtiness and hygiene as well. If it bothers you, try avoiding those areas, or you’ll need to mentally prepare beforehand.

To be frank, it’s certainly a positive change seeing development in the old district. But if proper planning and maintenance aren’t taken seriously, the outcome transforms perfectly good areas into spots less desirable for others. It would be quite a shame.

Such urban appearance and tourist experience might not attract many visitors or generate more consumption. Ah, it just leaves one feeling somewhat disappointed.

But still, even overlooking these negative points, development around the old station is gradually progressing. There are still numerous specialty shops and old-fashioned flavors worth exploring. Hoping to see some constructive changes during my next visit!
