Guangzhou: So Good, I'm Never Coming Back. 1

This is not a clickbait post, but rather a sincere sharing of my adventurous time in Guangzhou!

    • Recently, I was feeling a bit down and decided to head straight to my friend who was working in Guangzhou. As soon as I arrived, it felt like every pore on my body was sucking up water, making me all sticky from the humidity.
      • (Friendship tip: Located in Southern China, Guangzhou enjoys a subtropical climate, so the air is super humid. Especially during summers, newcomers might feel like they're in a sauna. Prepare both physically and mentally for this steamy warmth!)
    • In these days spent in Guangzhou, I had quite an awakening experience: cockroaches! Cockroaches everywhere! Now, I've grown so accustomed that I can handle one with ease now.
      • Important reminder for those planning to visit (it is crucial!):
        • Cockroaches: Cockroaches are extremely common here, some even fairly large, especially in old neighborhoods. First-time visitors may be initially scared off by their presence.
        • How to cope: When checking into hotels or hostels, you should first inspect the corners of the rooms. If particularly fearful, consider bringing some safe insecticide spray or choose newer accommodation with higher reviews.
    • Oh, another incident involved my obsession with spicy food. Even when ordering what they say is super-spicy or medium-spicy rice noodles (a popular dish made with rice flour noodles), it wasn't even remotely spicy enough to satisfy my palate. The love I have for spiciness waned as a result.
      • Second tip: Cantonese cuisine, or Yuezhu cuisine, emphasizes the original taste and freshness of ingredients, contrasting with heavily spiced cuisine from other regions of China such as Sichuan or Hunan. Therefore, if you desire fiery spices, aim for Sichuan or Hunan restaurants specifically seeking out this flavor.
    • But then, there were the delicious roasted garlic pork ribs and dried scallop bone congee – the aroma of fresh food hit me and left me speechless. At that moment, I truly understood why Cantonese people are known for loving good food.
    • Overall, a perfect Guangzhou would have its weather not excessively humid or sunny, with fewer ‘clever’ cockroaches, would make for the ideal vacation!

Rats and mosquitoes are pretty clever, you know.

Mix boric acid with mashed potatoes, roll it into balls, and place them in corners. They'll eat it, get thirsty, search for water, and end up dying in the drains.
