Those "Photo-Op Fiends"? Annoying as Hell! 1

Hi everyone, fellow travel enthusiasts! I recently returned from Suzhou, and there are some things that I really can't keep to myself — they need to be aired out, and I want to remind my friends who might visit in the future.

Suzhou, after all, is known as a typical water town. A traditional gondola cruise through one of its ancient canals or historic gardens should provide an extremely pleasant experience.

    • Some fellow travelers, however, ruin it:
      • They stand at the front of the boat snapping endless pictures with their phones or cameras, completely blocking everyone else's view with their elevated arms!
      • They chatter loudly and endlessly among themselves, making their voices seem almost like those of a gang ready to topple the boat at any moment. Wanting to quietly enjoy the scenic riverbanks? Tough luck!

After finally making it onto land, you hope to get a small respite by simply relaxing under one of the scenic pavilions by the riverbank (one of those little structures where people could rest while taking in beautiful views).

    • But guess what happens? “Professional photoshooters” swarm over:
      • They act as if they were all driven by motors, incessantly switching positions to take endless selfie-style group pictures. One person finishes the shoot, another immediately takes their place; they never cease.
      • Their loud voices drown out everything around them and make them seem utterly absorbed in their own world.

I sincerely ask everyone: are we here to have fun but completely disregard other people’s feelings? Scenic beauty belongs to everyone! #Frustration-FreeTravel #SuzhouGrumble

⚠️ Some tips for folks planning trips to Suzhou (or other crowded tourist spots):

    • On blocking people's view while taking pictures or creating disturbance noise:
      • For the gondola ride: If, during your cruise, you notice someone constantly obstructing your view by holding up their phones high, or they just won't stop talking:
        • What to do: Move somewhere else on the boat — perhaps sit on the opposite side or where fewer people are. Sometimes moving to the stern even leads to temporary peace and quiet. If that doesn't work... just grit your teeth, try conveying your displeasure through looks (though it usually goes unnoticed).
      • On the riverside or at tourist attractions: If you're met by overly long poses and group photos at popular places by the river or certain scenic spots:
        • What to do: Politely ask them to speed it up or share the space, letting others have their time with the camera too. Should they ignore your request, move to a different spot instead. Skipping peak hours is often a good strategy — traveling outside of holidays, during times of the day when there are few crowds, can improve your experience significantly.
    • How to avoid such disturbances:
      • Avoid peak seasons: Optimal visits occur during non-holiday periods or when there’s lower tourist density.
      • Venture off the beaten path: Besides known renowned gardens, Suzhou has many charming, quiet alleys and smaller waterways – lesser-known, yet beautiful spots providing an authentic feel for water-town tranquility.
      • Be calm and collected: Crowds in popular places are routine. Relax, don't let other people's inappropriate behavior ruin your mood. Locate spaces where you can genuinely appreciate the beauty all around you.

Hopefully, all of us can enjoy our journeys!
