So That's What Feeling Inferior Means: My China Wake-Up Call 1

Wow! I finally have the opportunity to explore Shanghai through walking tours (Citywalk). I'll be honest with you guys. Coming from a remote small town, I'm basically considered naive, and at 20 years old, this is my first real opportunity to travel far away to explore a big city. I was so excited yet nervous inside.

    • About Me (And Maybe You Too!):

      • Hehe, jokingly calling myself a "king from a small area" (just kidding!), it’s my first time standing in places like the Bund surrounded by towering skyscrapers and crowds of people. To be honest, I did feel a little overwhelmed and out of place in such a bustling metropolis.
      • If you're also experiencing what I am going through for the first time in an international metropolis, you might feel a little "insecure" or at a loss. Don’t worry about it; it’s completely normal! In big cities, there’s always a fast pace and lots to take in. It's understandable not being able to adjust immediately.
    • Thoughts for First-timers to Shanghai (Especially like me):

      • Mindset Preparation: Big cities are indeed huge, with an overwhelming number of people too! Be prepared for the crowds especially at famous tourist spots like the Bund.
      • Cost Awareness: Living expenses in Shanghai are relatively higher, particularly around tourist attractions. As a budget traveler, I planned ahead and did some research. Knowing how much you typically need for food, entertainment, etc., can help budget-wise.
      • Don't Be Afraid to Ask: While mobile maps come in handy, sometimes you may still be unsure. Local Shanghai residents are generally very welcoming; don’t hesitate to ask for directions should you need them.
      • Enjoy the Moment: Don’t let feelings of being “rural” or out of place affect your mood. We travel to experience new things and broaden our horizons! Your origin doesn't determine your perspective or right to see the world, right?

In short, this trip to Shanghai opened up an entirely new world for me. Although there were small shockers along the way, there were more new surprises and excitement. I hope my little feelings could resonate with anyone who's experiencing big city life for the first time and give them a bit of courage!

What's there to feel insecure about? With that long hair and your cosplay skills, you're already a perfect fit for Shanghai.

              Why do you say that?
