Shanghai Bound! Your #1 'Landmine' to Avoid?
-
Hello, fellow travel enthusiasts! I'm about to explore Shanghai and would love some advice from you all:
-
Eating:
- You know, there are countless "internet-famous restaurants" online now; those that appear really popular on social media and are famous for long queuing customers.
- I'm curious, which internet-famous restaurants with big names but less-than-stellar taste or surprisingly high prices should I avoid? Please share real experiences – I really don't want to be disappointed!
-
Things to see:
- Shanghai has countless attractions, but some places might give you the impression of "not worth visiting." Or that could be so crowded that the experience wouldn’t be great.
- Simply put, provide some "避雷" (Bì léi) tips. In Mandarin, this means avoiding potential disappointing or unpleasant experiences.
-
A Special Note:
-
If you've experienced places with overblown reputations but were underwhelmed or low value-for-money, please let me know!
-
For example, some destinations advertise like they're incredible, but then turn out too commercialized, or just don't live up to expectations.
-
How can I avoid this? By taking time to read others' reviews ahead of time rather than relying solely on advertisements and doctored images!
-
To make my trip to Shanghai less bumpy and more enjoyable, I look forward to your experienced advice. Thanks a lot!

I found @A小李同学-玩转天涯 for a quality tour, and it was pretty hassle-free.
-
When you exit Hongqiao Station, try not to take a taxi for distances under 10km, as the drivers might scold you.
-
I wish I'd seen your post sooner! The driver kept scolding me for choosing the wrong route, saying, 'This isn't like the countryside!' – but I'm actually from Beijing.
-
The plum rain season is approaching. If you're planning to visit, try to come sooner.
-
What's the weather like in Shanghai from mid-July to mid-August?
-
Don't buy anything labeled 'Shanghai specialty snacks' – those are usually just for tourists.
-
That's right, especially those so-called 'Old Shanghai' small restaurants around the Bund and Nanjing Road. They're mostly tourist traps.
-
I'm planning to visit Shanghai at the end of June. I'm wondering if it will rain, as I want to go to Disneyland.
-
Just avoid all the tourist attractions.
-
Then why am I even going?
-
Bring plenty of money.
-
I was just there a couple of days ago. My only observation is the scarcity of squat toilets. It's not that sitting toilets are a problem, but they really need to be clean, and some in the malls were a bit dirty.
-
I'm pretty much a homebody, so I enjoy eating Malatang. My go-to spots are Jing'an Xiaoting, Jiang Ji, and Liu Wenxiang. If I'm taking the kids out, we go to Happy Valley.

There's a place called Jiu Jiu Xiao Chao near Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street. It's a bit of a 'hole-in-the-wall' spot, but all their dishes are freshly stir-fried. If you decide to go, make sure to get there early to queue, about an hour before peak mealtime.
