As I've said, this is just my personal opinion. These things are inherently subjective. There's no law stating that if you feel a certain way about a place, everyone else must feel the same. It's precisely because I've been to so many places that I personally feel this way.

Honestly, it's hard to avoid these types. They're likely just customer service agents operating across different platforms, taking orders. They could easily pull a fast one and then disappear by switching accounts. What probably happened is you booked, but then May Day got so popular that no local travel agencies were willing or able to pick up your booking.

Personally, I feel there's a huge difference. When we went, it was incredibly crowded. We didn't get to appreciate the beauty of the Jiangnan water towns, nor did we experience much of the local culture. Plus, as someone from northern China, I wasn't used to the food. It was my worst travel experience. Now I miss my trip to Chengdu even more.
