It is pretty good. Once you get used to the cost of living in Shanghai, everywhere else feels inexpensive, and you don't get that uncomfortable feeling of being ripped off. BTW, Si, you're seriously talented at photography—it's gotta be you!

I've stumbled upon Si's posts so many times; I'm definitely a long-time, devoted fan. You make Shanghai look like a fairyland!

I used to work in this very building. My take-home pay was 10,000 RMB. And yet, every afternoon, I'd still 'performatively' grab a Starbucks. After paying rent, I'd be 2,000-3,000 in credit card debt each month.

A paradise for 'hustle culture kings'? Is that really something to be proud of?

But people in Shanghai can be quite aloof, and the older women ('aunties') there can be really blunt and hurtful. I never felt any genuine human warmth in that city.

I don't think it's necessarily aloofness; perhaps it's just politeness, maintaining a comfortable distance. Some people aren't used to being greeted with overt enthusiasm right off the bat.

Shanghai isn't actually that 'dog-eat-dog' anymore, though the cost of living is certainly high.

Locals probably aren't caught up in the intense competition, right?
