Shanghai's Grossest Eats & Rip-off Prices: My WTF Warning List!
-
Sure thing, fellow fun-seekers! Let me share some important tips with you all. When we go out, who among us wouldn't want to have a smooth and enjoyable experience while avoiding those pitfalls? This post will serve as a reminder — no matter if you’re heading out yourself or sharing an experience with foreign friends.
Nowadays, instead of relying on the glowing reviews by "internet celebrities," it's better to trust the genuine feedback from regular "netizens"!
- Please feel free to share any "minefields" you've encountered in the comments section. We can all come together to avoid them!
- Share your experiences fearlessly and openly. I'll keep this thread going, and everyone is encouraged to save it for future reference.
Can you believe it? There are some Japanese restaurants that are just plain terrible!
-
One of them is the Shanghai-based trendy izakaya(Japanese bars with cuisine)called "Ieyoshi Drinking House."
- I heard their dipping noodles were famous and ordered a table three days in advance.
- However, I was deeply disappointed! Even though I usually eat almost anything, I found their food unpalatable.
- The saltiness truly alarmed me! After having dipping noodles paired with some "yakisumi" (Japanese yakitori), I drank copious amounts of water feeling like I could down an entire water barrel at home, yet surprisingly had no urge to go to the toilet afterwards (imagine how salty that tastes that even your body lacks water).
-
I am genuinely warning others — one saved experience is one gained – avoid being part of the hype and spending money for an unpleasant experience.
️ Special Notice/Warning!
- This chain has multiple stores around Shanghai. I made a reservation at the "Gubei" store(an area in Shanghai heavily populated with foreigners)and they said I must eat within an hour before offering a seat!
- Another location is in the "Huangpu District" (Shanghai's central business district). They aren’t as stringent with reservations, but the bottom line is… It still tastes terrible.
Watch out when traveling, don’t let false claims trick you!

Huoshaoyun's dishes are all a bit weird. I couldn't figure out why it's so popular and always has a line, except maybe for their copper pot braised chicken?
-
If you think it's delicious, please just ignore this comment. If you want to argue, please start a new thread.

Whenever I see posts like this, I always check the comments for 'Shanshiliu'. If no one's mentioned it yet, then let me be the one: Shanshiliu!!!
-
LMAO! Any dishes to avoid? That sour soup fish I had was truly awful.
-
Haling Bullfrog Noodles – way too salty.
-
Upvoted. The problem isn't just that it's salty; it's also just plain bad. Beyond the saltiness, there's no other flavor – not fragrant, no real depth, and it even leaves a pasty feeling in your mouth...
-
A Long Time Ago Lamb Skewers... terrible value for money... and not even that tasty.
-
They are indeed a bit on the pricey side...
-
Yeren Xiansheng (Mr. Wildman) – doesn't taste like authentic gelato.
-
Very mediocre.
-
NiuNew Sukiyaki!!!! Way too sweet… and both my friend and I had explosive diarrhea afterwards. Who else understands the agony of a terrible stomachache while rushing for the last subway, too scared to get off?
-
Ditto! After eating there, the pain was so bad I couldn't leave my house for three days.
-
Has anyone mentioned Gelaoguan? Seems like they've all closed down now. I've never had such a 'bland' hotpot in my life.
-
It was actually really good when it first opened, but there are way fewer branches now.
-
Sawada's dorayaki.
-
Seconded! It practically choked me. I never want to eat dorayaki again.
-
I'm going next Thursday. Any good recommendations?
-
Is it too late...?
-
Micang Pop – strong eggy smell, and the service was terrible too.
